Althea Vail

Clay Artist

Working with clay is meditative, a passion, and a calling that began for me in the mid 1990’s. Attending many classes and national workshops and conferences has allowed for learning from other talented clay artists and helped me find a voice in clay. After 27 years as a public school educator, I retired in order to focus on having my hands in clay as much as possible.

The functional work I produce is either wheel-thrown or hand-built with slabs, and the clays used are stoneware and earthenware. All work is created and electric kiln fired in my home studio, Pine Tree Pottery, in Blackwood, NJ.

The creation of a clay piece from start to finish is a fascinating process as the clay changes in form and chemical composition from a malleable organic mass to a durable piece of art. Knowing that others will be using and enjoying a hand-made piece of my pottery is inspirational and energizing. The enjoyment felt while creating with clay is borne to the user of the pottery.
